However its setting, in what the book itself describes as the monotonous flatland of the English Fens, proved too uninspiring to merit my attention whilst I was basking in the freedom of my wider-reading orientated English literature A Level. I first bought the book back in my hazy, idealistic days of Sixth Form, with every intention of reading it to better understand postmodern literature. Waterland has been described as one of the finest pieces of fiction written in the 1980’s and has been on my literary to-do list for a very long time. ![]()
